The long term consequences of the disastrous war of aggression against Ukraine are infecting the rest of society, not only in the form of enforced conscription for those not connected to Putin’s inner circle and those with money but now also in the demand from the President for Life that the Russian Academy of Sciences, which is the equivalent of both the Royal Academy and the British Academy – arts and sciences – mobilise its resources to assist the war against Ukraine. No doubt for those in the field of technology, as is the current president of the Academy, no damage will result. But how will those in the humanities justify their new existence?
