The Call For Purges in Russia

It did not take long for the hardliners in Russia – in the military-industrial newspaper – to call for a purge of higher education and the media under the slogan “The Denazification of Ukraine Makes No Sense Without the De-liberalisation of Russia.” The demand appears beneath a caricature entitled “Words Can Kill.” The social sciences and history are particular targets. It also calls for a new organ of power providing for “the information defence of the country” (sic.)

Undoubtedly this kind of vengeful talk was what was bothering the Russian journalist interviewing the head of the Duma on Komsomol’skaya pravda radio. Volodin was faced with expressions of anxiety about people being spied upon and reported to the authorities as in the 1930s under Stalin and fears of a repeat of the Terror of 1937.
