Further Protest and Crackdown

It was entirely predictable that the Russian government would once again beat up citizens who went out to protest against the extension of Naval’ny’s incarceration. The massing of the forces of order in key streets in both St Petersburg and Moscow was insufficient deterrent to those protesting.

Nezavisimaya gazeta gently suggests that behaving in this way does the government no credit but carefully leaves the president’s name out of it, instead focusing on his implausible press spokesman, Peskov, flailing in the wind of indignant criticism from reporters.

Word thus far has it that 3-4,000 were detained.
