The resignation of the head of the CDU, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, comes as a great relief to Moscow as she is hostile to the Russian régime. But this was not the reason for what amounts to a palace coup at the CDU.

The resignation was precipitated by Chancellor Merkel, who, in her high-handed manner, interfered in what is really the business of her successor at the CDU; the occasion being the support given by Kramp-Karrenbauer to a coalition in Thuringia with the right wing extremist party AfD, which Merkel considers unacceptable. The irony in this is that the AfD is pro-Russian by inclination.
